By bedtime on Saturday night, everyone in St. Cloud will have been amply warned to set their clocks ahead an hour. That’s a good idea because, if we don’t get ahead of the game, when we open one eye on Sunday to see if it’s time to get up, we’ll either suddenly remember that the clock is lying to us, or else believe what it tells us—setting the stage for varying degrees of timekeeping disarray for the rest of the day. Either way, it will be less dismaying to take your medicine on Saturday. Just give up and surrender the hour ahead of time (literally).

There are those who feel that at 2 AM on Sunday, all St. Cloud will actually be falling victim to what amounts to petty theft. It may be sanctioned, but once Daylight Saving Time is officially called back into action, the hour’s worth of sleep doesn’t have a chance of being returned to its rightful St. Cloud owners until 2 AM on November 6.

Although the embezzlement will have continued for nearly eight months, no thought of adding even a minute’s worth of interest will be volunteered. The chronologists who are responsible for the whole caper contend that they’re performing a public service. Nor will thought be given to compensating the pain and suffering that will be inflicted on Sunday as everyone struggles to remember where they stashed the pamphlets with the instructions that tell the order you press the buttons on the back of all the digital clocks.  

 For St. Cloud, Daylight Saving Time does mean we will be greeted with less sunlight early in the day—and some feel it’s almost worth the daylight gained before sunset. One study in the journal Chronobiology International finds that either way—DST or no DST—adds risk to human health. They think that the only safe alternative is setting our daily schedules to sync with the actual sunrise and sunset. That would make winter workdays delightfully brief…and come to think of it, would also mean more daylight hours for summertime St. Cloud showings and open houses!  

Whether it’s Daylight Saving Time or not, I’ll be wide awake, awaiting your call!
